Botany Competition

Available to Ashtabula County High School Teachers and Students

ASD took over the management of the Botany Competition available to Ashtabula County High School Teachers and Students in 2013, from a group of Community People who wanted to expand the knowledge of our area high school students in the field of botany.  This competition did begin in 2001 and has impacted many students since that date.

The High School Botany Teams are made up of five students and are asked to learn how to identify 30 trees in the fall and 34 wild flowers in the spring, using field guides and scientific names/terms. The Ashtabula River Gulf area has been used, thus learning more about science and the Ashtabula Environment.  Advance training is offered to each high school to provide them with a practice set of identifications.  Tree ID Books, Field Guides, T-shirts and an awards luncheon are provided along with monetary awards for the schools to use in their botany/science studies.

Volunteers from Master Gardeners and the community develop, run and score the competitions, under the guidance of Mary Howe, one of the developers of this program.  This past year Botany Competition has grown to serving 8 of our Ashtabula County High Schools with 87 individual students in 16 teams.

This program is funded through donations -- community organizations, individuals, garden clubs and foundation donations. Any donations are greatly appreciated.
